CHAPTER 15
I PROBABLY SHOULD have called first.
I just had to get Val out of my bed for a little while, and nothing kills an erection like hanging out with your mom.
It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now that I see the sparkle in my motherâs eyes Iâm second-guessing myself.
âThis is Valerie.â I tip my head toward my mother. âVal, this is my mother, Celine Reed.â
Val takes my motherâs hand. âItâs nice to meet you.â
My motherâs eyes slide to me for just a second before moving back to Valerie. âLetâs go sit.â She hooks one arm around Valerieâs shoulders, leading her into the large apartment sheâs occupied for as long as I can remember. âWould you like a drink, Valerie? Maybe a cocktail?â
Val glances my way. âThat would be great, thank you.â
âFantastic.â My mother takes Val straight to her favorite sitting room. The second she walks in, Valâs eyes light up.
âAre these all your dogs?â
âFor now.â My mother gives Mister French the bulldog mix a pat as she passes. âIâm thinking of adding another to the herd.â
Val heads straight for Niles, pausing just as her hand reaches out for the labâs head. âMay I pet him?â
âOf course, dear.â My mother gives her a wink. âYou can pet any of my boys.â
Oh God.
This is definitely not as great of an idea as I thought it would be.
My mother reaches for me. âCome on, Jay honey. Letâs go get Valerie a drink.â
When we reach the kitchen Michael stares at us like heâs not sure what to do. âMy lady?â
My mother gives him a smile. âThereâs a lovely woman in the sitting room. Could you see what she would like to drink?â
Michael tips his head her way. âOf course.â
I catch sight of his printed apron as Michael passes by. âDoes he have an apron that matches each of your outfits?â
My mother lifts a shoulder. âMaybe.â
âThat man is a saint.â
âI agree.â She steps a little closer and lowers her voice. âBut right now I think we have more important things to discuss, such as why you are here with a woman.â
Iâve only introduced my mother to two of the women Iâve dated, and never this early on. âShe needs a job.â
My motherâs head bounces back a little, her eyes widening.
âAnd I may have made her think itâs already essentially in the bag if she wants it.â
âAnd what is it that you believe I should hire this woman to do?â
âShe has a business degree and worked for the largest manufacturer of airplane parts in the world. I think she could probably handle caftans.â It feels good to tell my mother what Val does. Did.
If anyone in the world would appreciate an educated and successful woman itâs Celine Reed.
But my mother doesnât seem impressed. Her eyes narrow. âIn that case why would she be interested in what I do?â
âUm.â I fish around for a way to explain this to my mother, without scarring her permanently. âShe wanted to work for me.â
My motherâs brows lift.
