CHAPTER 15

I PROBABLY SHOULD have called first.

I just had to get Val out of my bed for a little while, and nothing kills an erection like hanging out with your mom.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now that I see the sparkle in my mother’s eyes I’m second-guessing myself.

“This is Valerie.” I tip my head toward my mother. “Val, this is my mother, Celine Reed.”

Val takes my mother’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

My mother’s eyes slide to me for just a second before moving back to Valerie. “Let’s go sit.” She hooks one arm around Valerie’s shoulders, leading her into the large apartment she’s occupied for as long as I can remember. “Would you like a drink, Valerie? Maybe a cocktail?”

Val glances my way. “That would be great, thank you.”

“Fantastic.” My mother takes Val straight to her favorite sitting room. The second she walks in, Val’s eyes light up.

“Are these all your dogs?”

“For now.” My mother gives Mister French the bulldog mix a pat as she passes. “I’m thinking of adding another to the herd.”

Val heads straight for Niles, pausing just as her hand reaches out for the lab’s head. “May I pet him?”

“Of course, dear.” My mother gives her a wink. “You can pet any of my boys.”

Oh God.

This is definitely not as great of an idea as I thought it would be.

My mother reaches for me. “Come on, Jay honey. Let’s go get Valerie a drink.”

When we reach the kitchen Michael stares at us like he’s not sure what to do. “My lady?”

My mother gives him a smile. “There’s a lovely woman in the sitting room. Could you see what she would like to drink?”

Michael tips his head her way. “Of course.”

I catch sight of his printed apron as Michael passes by. “Does he have an apron that matches each of your outfits?”

My mother lifts a shoulder. “Maybe.”

“That man is a saint.”

“I agree.” She steps a little closer and lowers her voice. “But right now I think we have more important things to discuss, such as why you are here with a woman.”

I’ve only introduced my mother to two of the women I’ve dated, and never this early on. “She needs a job.”

My mother’s head bounces back a little, her eyes widening.

“And I may have made her think it’s already essentially in the bag if she wants it.”

“And what is it that you believe I should hire this woman to do?”

“She has a business degree and worked for the largest manufacturer of airplane parts in the world. I think she could probably handle caftans.” It feels good to tell my mother what Val does. Did.

If anyone in the world would appreciate an educated and successful woman it’s Celine Reed.

But my mother doesn’t seem impressed. Her eyes narrow. “In that case why would she be interested in what I do?”

“Um.” I fish around for a way to explain this to my mother, without scarring her permanently. “She wanted to work for me.”

My mother’s brows lift.
